Barbara
Russell has been in the food industry for as long as she can
remember. At the young age of 14 she started washing dishes at
the
Frog Rock Country Club in Hammonton where she grew up, went
to school and raised her family.
“I can’t remember a day when food was not part of it,” she laughs,
“whether I was serving as a waitress, bartending, hosting or cooking
for my family, I was always surrounded by food.”
“Apparently I must love it, because 30 years later, I’m still
at it”
Barbara says.
“Growing up in an Italian family has enabled me to enjoy the great
taste of food, yet very simple cooking,” she says. “My grandmother
and mother were fabulous cooks and everything was always
homemade whether it was soup, pasta, meatballs, cakes or cookies,
every meal was a treat.”
Working in the restaurant industry has enabled Barb to get hands
on training without opening a book. “By watching the chefs and
asking a lot of questions, you would be surprised how much you
can learn. Things I experienced as a young waitress, I still have
with me today, and I carry these through to my restaurant on a
daily basis.”
The restaurant is Pic-A-Lilli Wings & Things, The Pic-A-Deli,
and Scoopy’s Ice Cream Parlor located on Jackson Road in Medford.
Barbra and her husband Don opened their new venture on July 24,
2000. They specialize in chicken wings and tails, steak sandwiches,
Buffalo chicken cheese steaks, homemade soups, salads, etc. and
the list goes on.
Don Russell also comes from a long line of restaurant blood. The
Russell family acquired the first liquor license in Indian Mills
in 1927 and are still operational today, trading as Pic-A-Lilli
Inn, located on Route 206.
“Catering is my love, my passion,” says Barb, “I guess it’s the
Italian in me. ‘Let me feed you!’ should be my motto, or ‘No job
too big or too small.’
